What is propolis?

Propolis is a resinous, sticky substance that bees use to join their hive materials together, in combination with beeswax and other resinous secretions from the bark of plants. The bees cover the inside walls of the hive with it, thus preventing the spread of bacteria and fungi that would be detrimental to the health and well-being of the colony.
It consists mainly of resin (50%), wax (30%), essential oils (10%), pollen (5%). The other components are aromatic substances, sugars, balsams, terpenes, aliphatic acids and their esters, flavones, minerals, vitamins, trace elements and other known and unknown components.
